About this test

This is a free English typing test. Pick a passage, pick a time, start typing. You get gross WPM, net WPM and accuracy at the end. No signup, nothing to install, and your result stays on your own computer.

Preparing for a government job? Check your notification for the required speed. Most clerical posts ask for somewhere between 25 and 35 words per minute in English. Whatever your target is, practise a little above it. Everyone types slower in the exam hall than at home.

One habit saves months of practice time: accuracy first, speed later. Errors get cut from your score, so a clean 30 WPM beats a careless 40 every time.

Frequently asked questions

What speed do government jobs ask for?

Depends on the post. The official notification always states it, usually 25 to 35 WPM for English typing posts. Some tests count key depressions per hour instead. Read your notification, that number is the only one that matters.

How is WPM counted here?

The standard way: every 5 characters including spaces is one word. Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM cuts uncorrected errors from that.

Gross WPM or net WPM, which one matters?

Net. Exams qualify you on error-adjusted speed.

Is this free? Do I need an account?

Free, no account, no email. Your scores stay in your own browser and we never see them.

Why is my speed lower in longer tests?

Short tests flatter everyone. In one minute your hands never get tired and your focus never slips. Pick a longer duration from the selector to see your real, sustainable speed.

Is this the same software as the real exam?

No practice site is the official exam software. The counting rules here are the standard ones, so your numbers are comparable. Before your exam, take the official mock test at least once.

How long does it take to reach 30 WPM?

With 30 to 45 minutes of daily practice, most people get there in 6 to 8 weeks. Daily is the key word. Two hours on Sunday does not work.
